22/6/24 MTL & BAMT South London Area Group – Collaborative training day

In June Music Therapy Lambeth teamed up with the British Association of Music Therapy to run a joint collaborative training day at the Brixton Windmill Education Centre. It was a wonderful event and we appreciated the beautiful location and collaboration with some fabulous Music Therapy students.

The focus of a collaborative training event is a coming together to share skills, conundrums, recent trainings and clinical work to gain a breadth and depth of feedback from within our Music Therapy community. This included:

• Music, Drawing and narrative session

• A group presentation on how we do Family group work at MTL

• A free improvisation session

• Reflections on a post-NICU (Neonatal intensive care unit) support group

15/01/22   Training day at the National Theatre

It was so wonderful to finally meet after 2 years for an in-person MTL team training with only one therapist online. Thanks to the national theatre for providing an amazing space! The Southbank Centre -our usual training venue- was closed due to graduation ceremonies but the National Theatre was calm, spacious and ideal in every way.

For this training we explored:

• M.I.T -melodic intonation therapy- which can be used to support parent-infant interaction and social communication
• mapping out and providing therapeutic support for at risk families
• musical clinical challenges when working with adolescents with Autism
• clinical aims and objectives when working with adolescents with ADHD

July 5th-9th 2016    European Music Therapy Conference in Vienna

Our Director -Kate Jones- attended the EMTC in Vienna and gave a presentation on some initial results from her PhD study on Music Therapy for children with Selective Mutism. The weather and the response to the presentation was very warm!

Lambeth Music Network Event @Southbank Centre – Wednesday 2nd April 2014

This event was to encourage partnership between local providers and create new innovative opportunities for project development. It was also good to meet  enthusiastic members of Lambeth Council.

MTL Southbank improvisation event – Sunday 14th July 2013

This event was in collaboration with the Tomorrows Warriors Jazz education group and their artistic director and bassist Gary Crosby OBE –  artist in residence at the Southbank Centre. It was part of a larger ‘From Lambeth with Love’ festival celebrating local voluntary sector organisations.

In a brief workshop prior to this event Music Therapists and Tomorrows Warriors came together to hatch a plan to provide some broad ‘containment’ for this public improvisation session. ‘Caravan’, ‘London Bridge is falling down’, ‘Canteloupe Island’ and ‘One Love’ gave us some themes along with some suggestions from the floor. We acknowledged the difficulties of showcasing therapy as it usually takes place in a confidential space but that this was an opportunity for people to join in with a fun experience of improvisation and musical self-expression.

The families attending played for an hour and asked for the event to be repeated in the future. Lets hope that this will be possible!
